Looking For: Photographers / Artists Interested in an Informal Artist Residency

Each month, I’ll be offering a person who is looking for a studio space and give them access my new studio for the equivalent of one week during which I won’t be using it. In exchange, I’d ask for 3-4 days of skill sharing or assisting.

What are you offering?

I’m granting access to my studio space near Metro Frontenac for up to 7 days / month to a photographer or artist. For example, you might be a photographer who needs a space for a test shoot to practice your lighting, a visual artist who needs room to work on a large piece, or a creative entrepreneur who would just like to work from a different location for a week.

What are you looking for in return?

I’m looking for 3-4 days of skill sharing / assisting. Here’s what I mean by that.

Skill sharing

I’m always seeking to learn new things, meet artists both inside and outside of photography, and collaborate on creative projects. I also have a list of specific skills I’m interesting in learning more about and would benefit from having someone teach me (or learn with me). Within photography for example, I’m currently interested in learning more about medium format, film photography, printing, light meters and ratios, etc. Not specific to photography, I’m interested in colour theory, composition, art x business, visual art history, etc. It’s all very broad, I know, but I’m interested in a lot of things. Share with me what you do, tell me about your interests, and I’ll let you know what I’m interested in learning from you!

Assisting

If your skillset doesn’t overlap with my current interests and you’re still interested in this residency idea, I could definitely also use your help in other ways. I’m not thinking about assisting in the traditional ‘photography assistant’ sense. Instead, I’d need someone who would be interested in helping me develop new lighting styles, build backdrops and sets in my studio, researching grants and gallery spaces of interest, creating a repertoire of potential creative collaborators, etc. If you’re starting out as a photographer, hopefully these are skills that would be beneficial for your future as well.
